Hard Time: Liquor Advertising Pours Into TV -- Looser Restrictions, Raft of New Launches Lead More Booze Brands to the Tube

By E.J. Schultz
Advertising Age

Sold in the U.S. for decades, Jägermeister could be found in most bars but never on TV. That changed this month when the imported German cordial took the plunge, breaking the first TV ad in its history.

"We felt that it was important to speak to our core consumer [of 21- to 29-year-old men], and in order to do so we needed to have a presence on television," said Amanda Blanco, brand manager for Jägermeister and VP at Sidney Frank Importing Co.

In doing so, Jägermeister followed what lately has seemed like a stampede of liquor brands to TV as marketers seek broad awareness for product launches or to build new buzz on old brands.

One reason for the new interest is that broadcast networks have loosened their rules, creating more opportunities for national buys. CBS, for instance, began accepting liquor ads during late-night programming within the last year. ABC has been taking hard-booze during "Jimmy Kimmel Live" for several months. And this spring, NBC began accepting spirits shows airing after 11 p.m. Eastern as long as 90% of the audience is of legal drinking age. (Industry self-regulations allow beer, wine or liquor ads only on programs where at least 71.6% of the audience is 21 or older.) More broadcast deals are "in the works," one industry insider told Ad Age.

05112012-alcohol-chart.jpgTV grabbed $142 million in advertising from liquor brands in 2010, or about 34% of all media spending by the category. That's up from $102 million and 23% just five years earlier, according to the latest data available provided to Ad Age by the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. (Discus), a liquor trade group. Magazines led with a 41% share, though that was down from 58% in 2005.

Liquor brands' TV spending fell to a little more than $141 million last year, according to Kantar Media. But it seems poised to grow again in 2012 as a host of products roll out TV campaigns, from Skinnygirl Cocktails to Wild Turkey, a 157-year-old bourbon brand that this month introduced its first TV spot, "Give "Em the Bird."

Liquor ads did not appear on any TV, national or local, for much of the 20th century, with the industry honoring a self-imposed ban from 1948 to 1996. Crown Royal, then owned by Seagram, broke the seal that year with a spot that aired in Corpus Christie, Texas. A growing number of TV affiliates have begun taking ads in recent years, and marketers have found more opportunities on cable networks such as Comedy Central, E! and ESPN. Cable still gets more than 90% of the spending, according to Kantar.

But the new acceptance from broadcast networks is a victory for the spirits industry, which has sought parity with beer and wine since it lifted the ban.

"Just as the federal government doesn't distinguish between beer and wine and spirits, [so] most of these broadcasters are recognizing that alcohol is alcohol," said Frank Coleman, senior VP of Discus.

TV is benefiting from aggressive innovations as marketers seek awareness on fresh offerings such as flavored whiskeys and other line extensions.

"The way to talk about a new product broadly and uniquely is TV, because it's efficient," said Kevin George, chief marketing officer at Beam Inc. And marketers are moving to TV even as they spend more on digital.

After pulling most TV advertising a few years ago, Beam is back in strength. It's dedicating 43% of its brand investment to TV in 2012, up from 34% last year. In the past year, Beam has put five brands on TV for the first time, including Maker's Mark, which launched a campaign last year on Discovery Channel paired with digital content on discovery.com. The buy was expanded this year to TNT, TBS, TRU and the History Channel.

Later this month, Beam will introduce its first TV campaign for Skinnygirl, a lower-calorie, ready-to-serve cocktail line, including offerings like White Cranberry Cosmo and Margarita.

Diageo-owned Captain Morgan rum was the biggest liquor TV advertiser last year, spending $17 million, according to Nielsen. (That's still a far cry from the nation's biggest beer brand, Bud Light, which spent more than $230 million on TV in 2011, according to Kantar Media.) The campaign, which launched about a year ago, put the iconic character on TV for the first time, casting him in the 1600s as real-life privateer Captain Henry Morgan.

While the effort includes plenty of digital, "TV was a great place to launch that idea and tell the story in a compelling and visually stimulating way," said Diageo spokesman Dan Sanborn. In a move to reach more Hispanics, the marketer made a major upfront buy last year on Univision Communication's Galavision cable network for brands such as Ketel One and Johnnie Walker, as well as on every Univision-owned and -operated station. Diageo expects to continue the relationship this year.

Even brands that swore off TV are back.

Take Brown-Forman's Southern Comfort. It moved to an all-digital strategy in 2009, telling Ad Age then that it was having a hard time breaking through the spirits brands crowded into a few nightly cable shows. But SoCo returned to TV in 2010 and 2011 to launch lime- and pepper-flavored versions.

The brand's TV investment will grow this year, a spokesman said, because "we've seen increased consumer response during the time periods when we are on air."

New Charlie Sheen Series Safe to Sponsor, FX Tells Advertisers -- 'Anger Management' Marks Actor's TV Series Debut After 'Two and a Half Men' Imbroglio

By Brian Steinberg
Advertising Age

FX wants to make sure Charlie Sheen is hot, but not too hot to handle.

With Mr. Sheen starring in the cable outlet's new "Anger Management" sitcom -- and a potential multi-year deal in the balance -- executives at the News Corp. network have been out in force telling advertisers that the actor is safe to sponsor.

"You know what everyone has in the back of their mind," said Michael Brochstein, senior VP-ad sales at FX Networks. "Who am I seeing? Am I seeing 'Two and A Half Men' comedy, or am I seeing the Charlie Sheen who is a little bit out there? We dealt with it head-on."

Fiat, whose commercials feature Mr. Sheen, has already signed on to be a season-long sponsor of the show, which debuts June 28.

"Anger Management" extends FX's investment in the Charlie Sheen business. Repeats of "Two and a Half Men," his previous roost, fill a good portion of the network's schedule. And "Anger Management," a sitcom featuring Mr. Sheen as a one-time baseball hopeful who must learn to tone down his temper after he sabotages his sports career, would extend the network's dependence on the actor's ability to draw a broad audience.

The controversy surrounding Mr. Sheen in the recent past is the sort of stuff that makes straitlaced advertisers blanch. He was fired from "Two and A Half Men," a show produced by Warner Bros. and broadcast by CBS, after publicly disparaging showrunner Chuck Lorre.

That abruptly halted the show's production for the 2010-2011 season, itself enough of a red flag to many marketers. But Mr. Sheen then also went on a wild media tour highlighted by appearances with a porn star and scattered ramblings in radio interviews and web broadcasts.

Howard Stern's arrival on "America's Got Talent" presents a somewhat similar situation for NBC, though Mr. Stern has said in several interviews that he intends to keep things tame.

"Anger Management" seems to offer Mr. Sheen a new chapter in a career that's included sharp highs and lows. Loosely based on the 2003 film of the same name that starred Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson, the first season of "Anger Management" will run 10 episodes. If the show meets certain agreed-upon metrics, FX will pick up an additional 90 episodes and have exclusive rights to air the show until 2014, when older seasons can be sold into syndication.

For FX, the sitcom represents a chance to broaden its appeal. The network is already known for edgy dramas that include "The Shield," "Damages, and "Nip/Tuck," as well as current series such as "Justified" and "Sons of Anarchy." Lately, FX has placed a focus on nontraditional sitcoms such as "Wilfred" and "Archer," which joined the veteran comedy "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

But many of these series carry a TV-MA rating and feature content that a viewer would never see on CBS or ABC. "Anger Management," on the other hand, will have a TV-14 rating and is aimed at the same type of audience that enjoys broad comedies on the order of CBS's "How I Met Your Mother" or "Two and a Half Men," Mr. Brochstein said. FX originals typically air at 10 p.m., an hour at which most young people have gone to sleep. But "Anger Management" will appear at 9 p.m., another first for the network.

To get advertisers onboard, FX was prepared to show a rough cut of the "Anger Management" pilot at its meetings with media buyers, Mr. Brochstein said. They ended up screening parts of or all of it 60 times, he estimated. "My client wants to know that this is a good environment," was a sentiment he said he heard at various agencies. By the time the screenings were complete, most executives saw humor rather than red flags.

FX had other challenges in securing advertiser support. "Anger Management" was not part of the programming it sold in last year's upfront, which meant the June premiere and subsequent episodes had to be sold in "scatter," or much closer to air date, usually at a premium to prices established earlier in the year. "We had a job to do this year -- sell this in scatter and create awareness" at the same time, said Mr. Brochstein.

The debut will have plenty of attractions surrounding it. FX intends to run a 12-hour marathon of "Two and A Half Men" episodes featuring Mr. Sheen in advance of the 9 p.m. debut of "Anger Management." During the marathon, Mr. Sheen will appear in video segments and offer comments on the episodes. A second new half-hour of "Anger" follows at 9:30 p.m., with the season premieres of FX original comedies "Wilfred"and "Louie" to start at 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., respectively. A new FX late-night talk show, "Brand X," featuring comic actor Russell Brand, will be on at 11 p.m.

Movie studios have proven to be early strong supporters of the series, with 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate and Sony all singing up as advertisers, said Mr. Brochstein. Sony is expected to release a retooled "Spider Man" this summer, while Lionsgate is releasing "The Expendables 2."

Lionsgate produces "Anger Management," while 20th Century Fox is, like FX, owned by News Corp. There's no word on whether Warner Bros., which when we last checked seemed to hold Mr. Sheen in low regard, will find "Anger Management" a worthwhile promotional perch for its films.

Univision Lights the Upfront Fuse, Signs Early Deal With Starcom -- Pact, and Its Timing, Underscores Emerging Power Of Spanish-Language TV

Advertising Age

Spanish-language broadcaster Univision is the first network to snag an upfront deal this year.

Starcom USA and sibling multicultural media agency Tapestry are committing a significant amount of ad money from Burger King, Mars/Wrigley and Kellogg Co., among other clients, to Univision in the first publicly acknowledged pact in this year's upfront marketplace.

Starcom and Univision declined to specify terms of the deal, but executives said the volume involved was significant. The three marketers spent about $54.1 million with Univision in 2011, according to data from Kantar.

That this particular deal broke the upfront market signals a shift in how the annual event, during which TV networks try to sell ad inventory for the coming fall season, normally proceeds. Advertisers typically scramble to do deals with broadcast networks, and sometimes cable, with Spanish-language outlets wrapping up business toward the very end.

"There's a certain routine and tradition and legacy to our business that may not really be based on anything more than just tradition," said Mike Rosen, president-activation at Publicis Groupe's Starcom. "We think that the power of Spanish-language media that's been demonstrated by Univision content, its events, on all its platforms, is incredibly valuable to our clients as they try to win in the marketplace and win share gains and profitability."

Indeed, the deal comes before anyone can even dip their first shrimp in the cocktail sauce -- TV's annual upfront week is set to kick off Monday with Fox and NBC unveiling their fall programs to hundreds of advertisers.

"This is the most aggressive move that we've made in the marketplace, doing a deal this early of this size," said Danielle Gonzales, exec VP-managing director, Tapestry. "We made a big bet with them."

The pact will incorporate all of Univision's properties, including two broadcast networks, three cable channels, local TV and radio stations, and Univision's online, mobile and social video venues.

Univision collected nearly $2.2 billion in 2011, according to Kantar, an increase of about 16.7% over the previous year.

Starcom and Univision have been discussing the possible deal since late January, estimated David Lawenda, president-advertising sales and marketing at Univision. The company has made an aggressive pitch in recent months: With more of the consumers advertisers covet between the ages of 18 and 49 watching Univision content, why shouldn't marketers move more of their money to its telenovelas and other programming? The network even took out ads trumpeting Univision's performance over that of NBC's.

"This is the biggest single agency deal that we've done in Univision history, and the earliest date that we've ever done it," Mr. Lawenda said. "This deal underscores that the shift in the marketplace is very real and it's one that mirrors the changing demographics in this upfront."

Ms. Gonzales suggested some portion of the money being committed came from bringing new accounts and some new brands to Univison, though she noted a large amount came from clients who had done business with Univsion in the past. Even so, said Mr. Rosen, "any decision we make is going to impact other places where the money could have been spent, and I can tell you that certainly [these are] media dollars that could have been spent in other places, obviously in the Spanish-language networks as well as the English-language marketplace."

This upfront could mark a heady time for Spanish-language media. NBC Universal's Telemundo is the main rival to Univision. Meantime, News Corp. is preparing the launch of a broadcast network, MundoFox, and plans to make its pitch to advertisers next week along with the two more venerable outlets.

A&E Networks Blasts Cable Rivals for Copying Its Shows -- Uses Upfront Pitch to Knock Everyone From Discovery to YouTube

By Jeanine Poggi
Advertising Age

A&E Networks held nothing back in its upfront presentation to advertisers Wednesday evening, taking jabs at everyone from Discovery to YouTube and chastising cable networks for being copycats.

"We are creating genres on TV; we don't copy others," said President and CEO Abbe Raven. "We don't want the 25th generation of pawn or storage shows like TLC, Discovery or TruTV."

"A&E is about blazing a trail," she added, "not following someone else's."

A&E has achieved healthy ratings growth at its top three networks in the TV season to date, with its namesake channel up 5.5% in prime time among adults 18 to 49 years old, History gaining 2.7% and Lifetime growing 8.3%, according to Nielsen.

"A&E is still growing at a time when many top-20 cable networks are experiencing year-over-year erosion," said Bob Debitetto, president and general manager of the A&E network.

"We are doing it without a basketball hoop, baseball diamond ... or off-network shows," said Nancy Dubuc, president of History and Lifetime networks.

The success of reality fare like History's "Pawn Stars" and "Swamp People" has led to similar shows at other cable networks. But A&E relentlessly reminded advertisers and media buyers who started the trend in auctioning and other niche genres.

"Though often imitated, our originals need no introduction," Ms. Dubuc said before playing a sizzle reel featuring its top reality series. The video called "Ice Road Truckers" the one that started it all, "Swamp People" the first of its kind and "American Restoration" a show that defined a genre.

While A&E Networks blasted competitors for copying its programming, however, it never said it wouldn't keep riffing on now-familiar themes. New shows on History include "Outback Hunters," which won't stray too far from its previous series set in the outdoors, while A&E will premiere "Barter Kings," the latest in a line of bartering/auction/pawn shows.

Executives also said the company's portfolio of networks are nearing 100% original content in prime time, something other competitors couldn't match.

"We are not following the 'Big Bang' strategy," Ms. Raven said, referring to TBS's success with syndicated content that originally aired elsewhere.

And the presentation took on the recent NewFront presentations by online players like AOL and Hulu seeking to win some TV dollars. "A&E will beat any content YouTube can dream up," Ms. Raven said.

A&E stars like Jennifer Love Hewitt from "The Client List" and Abby Lee Miller of "Dance Moms," as well as the "Duck Dynasty" family, came out to support the network. The presentation was followed by a performance from Florence and the Machine.

Summer Slog Expected for TV Upfront -- Bullish Sellers Mixed With Weak Economy Will Probably Produce Slight Increase

By Brian Steinberg
Advertising Age

Don't book an early vacation this summer.

As this year's annual talks for the sale of TV ad time start in earnest, at least one network is expected to make the case for another year of price increases of 10% or more (Hello, CBS). At the same time, buyers are betting that economic factors crimping marketing budgets will force sellers to keep TV price hikes to a minimum. Dig below the rhetoric, and you're left with both sides acknowledging that dollar volume committed to the medium this year is likely to increase slightly -- but only after a lot of haggling.

050712-rebound-chart.jpg"This year, there are no conversations about it being a flat or down market," said one broadcast-network executive familiar with upfront discussions. "The question remains how strong the market will be."

The sentiment marks something of a cooling-off for the upfront, the time of year when Big TV tries to sell the bulk of its ad inventory for the fall season. For two years, advertisers have shoveled more money into TV, partly out of a desire to lock in lower prices before the economy improved, and partly out of feeling more confidence after a decimating recession.

As such, ad commitments for last year's upfront were between $8.8 billion and $9.3 billion. That was a marked increase from the recession-plagued upfront of 2009, when the five English-language broadcast networks took in $7.8 billion to $8.1 billion (but not enough to surpass the record-setting $9.5 billion they snared in 2004).

Buyers maintain that the economy is clouding optimism. They point to slow activity for so-called scatter advertising, or ads purchased closer to air date. A slow scatter period typically indicates a weaker upfront. Despite that, CBS President-CEO Les Moonves and several Wall Street analysts maintain high expectations for the market.

If the two sides can't find common ground, bargaining could drag on for weeks.

"We are looking at GDP expectations and other economic indicators that are roughly half of what they were last year, and we've got media-spend expectations that are less than half of what we were looking at last year when we negotiated the upfront," said Kris Magel, exec VP-director of national broadcast at Interpublic Group's Initiative. "Those kinds of changes have a dramatic impact on the amount of volume that might come into this year's upfront and the prices that might need to be paid. We expect growth, but not much -- there is no legitimate rationale for a market similar to last."

The bulls are running on Wall Street, however. In a recent research note, Barclays Capital analyst Anthony J. DiClemente said that CBS might win price increases (couched as "CPMs," or the cost of reaching 1,000 viewers) of 10%; Fox, 9%; ABC, 8%; and NBC, 7%; buyers privately said that a network that can get CPM hikes of anywhere near 5% to 6% will consider itself lucky.

Ad buyers and marketers have offered similar cautions in the past, only to capitulate in the rush to buy ad time in big-ticket shows. Last year, media-buying execs cited everything from a shaky economy to the aftermath of a nuclear disaster in Japan as reasons advertisers wouldn't stand for severe price hikes. In the end, CBS, Fox, CW and ABC were able to notch double-digit price increases.

This year, however, the TV networks may have a greater abundance of big-ticket TV programming to sell in the fourth quarter, including an extra NFL game on Thanksgiving night and a second season of "The X Factor." Additionally, there's no threat of an NFL work stoppage to send advertisers scrambling. When ratings points are in greater supply, it's harder to push for higher costs.

Meanwhile, automotive ad spending, which helped drive prices in the last few upfronts, could be tamped down, according to a recent report from Interpublic's Magna Global.

"In 2010 and yet again in 2011, a double-digit recovery in car sales was matched by a double-digit growth in automotive ad spend, from the very low levels reached in 2009, despite high unemployment and credit squeeze," the report said. "Going into 2012, new-car sales are still up in the first quarter, but now that many households have replaced their old cars in the last two years, protracted unemployment and steep gasoline inflation are likely to hamper further growth."

One common sentiment on both buy and sell sides? No one is predicting a wrap-up by early June.

"Without the threat of the NFL lockout, along with less robust scatter activity, the early psychology of this year's upfront marketplace portends less of a sense of urgency than a year ago," said Mike Rosen, president-chief activation officer of Publicis Groupe's Starcom USA.

Anheuser-Busch Warns UFC About Fighters' Sexist, Homophobic Comments -- Major Sponsor Threatens Action 'If Incidents Continue'

By E.J. Schultz
Advertising Age

Anheuser-Busch, a major sponsor of Ultimate Fighting Championship, has reprimanded the mixed-martial arts organization for remarks made by some fighters. Advocacy groups have criticized the fighters comments as sexist and homophobic.

"We've communicated to the UFC our displeasure with certain remarks made by some of its fighters, and they have promised to address this. If the incidents continue, we will act," the brewer said in a statement. A-B, which did not elaborate on potential actions, also stated that it "embraces diversity and does not condone insensitive and derogatory comments rooted in ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc."

The rebuke comes as the UFC is gaining mainstream exposure through support from major advertisers and a long-term TV deal with Fox that includes live prime-time matches.

In a statement to Ad Age, UFC said: "With over 425 athletes on our roster, there have unfortunately been instances where a couple athletes have made insensitive or inappropriate comments. We don't condone this behavior, and in no way is it reflective of the company or its values."

A-B last year renewed its UFC deal in a multiyear pact that makes Bud Light a sponsor of pay-per-view and TV broadcasts, while giving the Bud Light logo prominent placement in the UFC's "Octagon" ring, as well as in press conferences, weigh-ins and locker rooms.

As it rises in popularity, UFC remains a polarizing sport, criticized by some for showcasing violent fighting and inflammatory rhetoric.

"We believe that the UFC contributes to a culture of violence against women, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people," the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence stated in a January letter to state assembly members in New York, urging the state to uphold its ban on professional mixed martial arts, which is legal in most states. "Children, in particular, should not be exposed to the homophobic, misogynistic and violent language that has been permitted by the UFC."

The letter referred to incidents aggregated at a website called unfitforchildren.org, which includes a collection of UFC videos and comments made by people associated with the organization. (The website is run by Las Vegas-based Culinary Workers Union Local 226. The union has unsuccessfully tried to unionize casinos owned by Station Casinos, which is partly owned by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who also own UFC parent company Zuffa LLC.)

The incidents cited by National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence include:

* An undated video linked on unfitforchildren.org, in which UFC fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson urges a Japanese-speaking fan to say: "I'm a fag."

* A UFC press conference in which one fighter makes light of the Jerry Sandusky-Penn State scandal by telling another fighter: "I'm going to put those hands on you worse than that dude did them other kids at Penn State," according to this ESPN.com report.

* Comments from Joe Rogan, a TV analyst for some UFC events, who reportedly used the C-word to describe Yahoo Sports mixed martial arts blogger Maggie Hendricks. Ms. Hendricks had called out fighter Mr. Jackson for the way he dealt with female interviewers at UFC events, such as telling one that she made him "horny."

Noting that some of the incidents in question have occurred over social media, UFC told Ad Age that "unlike most other sports leagues, we encourage our athletes to engage online. It is part of our company culture, and whenever you are at the forefront of a trend or initiative, it comes with its own pitfalls. We will continue to embrace social media while looking for better ways to stay in front of the issues. This includes a mandate for our athletes to attend sensitivity training and a seminar on proper use of social media."

A-B first commented on the issue when asked about it by a couple of beverage trade publications, Kane's Beverage News Daily and U.K.-based Brewers' Guardian, which reported on criticism of Bud Light's UFC advertising by alcohol watchdog group Alcohol Justice. The group, formerly called Marin Institute, frequently criticizes alcohol marketers for a host of reasons. Alcohol Justice has seized on the UFC issue to criticize this UFC-themed Bud Light Lime ad, which it says is "disgusting and typical of their cage-fighting sponsorship advertising campaign."

The ad features barely clothed UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste rolling around in limes and playfully uttering double entendres. It has never run on TV and has been distributed only through AB's age-gated Facebook and YouTube pages, according to the brewer.

In a letter to shareholders of A-B global parent Anheuser-Busch InBev, Alcohol Justice alleged that as UFC sponsor, the brewer is "delivering harmful content to millions of underage youth. At center stage is the ever-present Bud Light logo."

In its statement, AB said: "We take our role as a responsible advertiser and marketer very seriously, and we adhere to the industry's voluntary advertising and marketing code. While brand advertising influences brand choice amongst those 21 years of age and older who have already decided to consume alcohol, research shows that it does not influence increased consumption or misuse."

The industry's self-regulations call for alcohol marketers to run ads only in digital and broadcast outlets where at least 71.6% of the audience is 21 or older.

AOL Touts New Scripted Series and Celeb-Fronted Video Content at 'Newfront' -- Content Creators Include Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone and 'Project Runway' Judge Nina Garcia

By Cotton Delo
Advertising Age

AOL touted a slate of new programming at its digital content "newfront" aimed at luring TV buyers with takes on familiar concepts, such as crime-scene investigations and housewife angst, that have made fortunes for the networks in the last decade.

Two of the series AOL unveiled Tuesday are scripted, which suggests that AOL is serious about investing in original content in hopes of winning TV ad dollars. One notable unscripted series: Twitter co-founder Biz Stone will host a 12-part series where he interviews the likes of former President Bill Clinton and the CEOs of Cisco and Nike.

At the center of AOL's video strategy is a hub called "AOL On," with channels such as food, business, entertainment, style and tech, in part curated by celebrities such as chefs Sam Talbot and Marc Forgione, "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier, and the ubiquitous Heidi Klum (who already has her own AOL site), who have agreed to appear on-screen talking about their areas of interest and to create "playlists" of video content picked from AOL's library.

All the new programs announced today are short-form, with each episode running for five to seven minutes. Debuting today on AOL On's tech channel and on the Huffington Post's crime vertical is "Digital Justice," a weekly reality series running for five episodes that shows how crime prevention units are deploying digital technology across the country. (An upcoming episode centers on the controversial "long-range acoustic hailing devices" that were reportedly used to disperse crowds at some "Occupy" protests last year.)

AOL's two upcoming scripted series, "Fetching" and "Little Women Big Cars," were both produced by Vuguru, the web studio founded by Michael Eisner through his Tornante Company. (It also just agreed to develop new scripted series for Yahoo.) AOL first inked a deal with Vuguru in November 2010, when the studio agreed to produce at least six original scripted series for the company, but these are the first series to be produced.

Debuting May 7 is "Little Women Big Cars," which features Kristy Swanson of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie, Ed Begley Jr. of "Portlandia," and Antonio Sabato, Jr. of "Melrose Place." According to a press release, "'Little Women Big Cars' centers around four devoted soccer moms struggling to balance their busy schedules, family lives and sanity."

The other announced Vuguru series, "Fetching," is being eyed to debut in June. Written by a "Sex and the City" veteran, it centers on a woman who quits her lawyer job and ends her engagement to open a doggy daycare business.

The largely celebrity-driven programming slate includes a vehicle for Nina Garcia, the Marie Claire fashion director and "Project Runway" judge, who was described in the program as "a secret weapon, guiding and motivating women through major life changes."

And then there's the previously announced "Tiger Beat Entertainment," which is being developed for the back-to-school season on Cambio.com. Jennifer Lopez will be an executive producer for "the scoop on entertainment, pop culture, and lifestyle for millennials." However, Ms. Lopez hasn't committed to being on camera.

American Legion Announces 2012 Recipients of Top Journalism Award

American Legion press release:

INDIANAPOLIS (April 23, 2012) – One broadcast station, a newspaper and a war correspondent’s feature on an online news website will receive The American Legion’s Fourth Estate Award during the organization’s 94th National Convention in Indianapolis on August 30.

The Fourth Estate Award has been presented annually by The American Legion since 1958 for outstanding achievement in the field of journalism. Nominations were considered in three categories: print, broadcast, and new media (Internet).

Taking top honor in the print category for the second consecutive year was the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. A nine-month investigation and series of articles by reporter Carl Prine, an Army and Marine veteran who served in Iraq, revealed that warrior transition units were so overwhelmed that many soldiers suffering physically or mentally from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan got little or no help. They continued to suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder, brain injuries, depression and other issues related to repeated combat deployments. The probe brought about congressional hearings, the resignation of a senior defense official and actions that led to significant improvements in the units. In 2011, the Trib won the Fourth Estate Award for exposing shoddy conditions in Pennsylvania’s state-run veterans homes.

KLRT-TV News Reporter Donna Terrell took the top honor in the broadcast category in Little Rock, Ark., with her reports, “Grieving a Child.” Having recently lost her daughter, she poignantly captured the emotional trauma of a military veteran and his wife who lost their small son to brain cancer and provided valuable information about dealing with the painful process of losing a loved one.

In the Internet (new media) category, freelance war correspondent Alex Quade’s video documentary for The Daily Caller, “Horse Soldiers of 9/11,” revealed the special operations of military and CIA operatives in Afghanistan who responded after the 9/11 attacks, using horses in their behind-the- lines operations. Her report broke the story of a monument, capturing the essence of their bravery, to rise in testament to them near "Ground Zero" in New York. Vice President Joe Biden quoted Quade's story during the statue's official dedication ceremony.

“These outstanding journalists have gone above and beyond the works of their peers; Indeed, they have exhibited the highest commitment to excellence in the research, writing and production of masterful reports that have truly made a difference for the better in our world,” said Fang A. Wong, national commander of the 2.4 million member American Legion.

“Journalism doesn’t get any better than that,” he said. “I will be honored to present each of them with our highest recognition of journalistic distinction, The American Legion Fourth Estate Award.”

Previous winners of the award include Dateline NBC, C-SPAN, United Press International, USA TODAY, The Detroit News, Fortune Magazine, ABC News, and Life Magazine, among others.

The nation’s largest veterans organization, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans affairs, Americanism, and patriotic youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 14,000 posts across the nation.
